Building Accountable Musicians through Student Discourse
Through hands-on activities you’ll experience how student discourse strengthens SEL, deepens expressive intent, and elevates musical rigor.
WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
The Ensemble as a Conversation: Building Accountable Musicians Through Student Discourse
What happens when our ensembles become true conversations instead of teacher-driven monologues? In this session, I guide music educators through practical, inspiring ways to bring student voice, inquiry, and expressive meaning-making into the heart of rehearsal.
We’ll explore how to build a culture of belonging and collective responsibility, integrate accountable talk into daily practice, and reimagine rehearsal routines so students develop as independent musicians who think, listen, question, and say something through their playing.
Through hands-on activities—both in and out of context—you’ll experience how student discourse strengthens SEL, deepens expressive intent, and elevates musical rigor. You’ll leave with concrete strategies, creative structures, and a renewed vision for what student-centered music learning can be.
